I agree. I think it's hard to understand its popularity once you already seen the masterfully-done LOTR movies as well.
Didn't Tolkien largely invent to genre (in the form we think of it today)? Lots of the ideas existed in some form or other, but he tied it into a coherent fantasy world.
Before Tolkien the elves were little green men from irish folk tales. He "re-invented" the elves as beautiful immortal creatures. I loved "the Hobbit". I remember reading it in a summer holiday and I thought it was wonderful!
Um. I actually have the LUXURY that I read this book as an adult because first of all, I could read it in English and didn't have to resort to any of the German translations since English isn't my native language and also I was able to understand the things in this story better. I really find it quite arrogant to say that reading a certain book as a child would be "better". Nope, it isn't. Reading a book at all is the only thing that counts.
