Leon RE Thanks yes, now I see Severus was not necessarily better than James. I do accept that interpretation of James but find it intriguing that James almost seemed to become more mysterious as the books developed, and ultimately we, and Harry, can only guess about James.

Sofiab "I would not agree completely with your assessment of Severus, though. I think he was potentially a good person in most regards, but he was also self-centered, grudge-bearing, and mean. He reminds me of Ebenezer Scrooge in that way--full of potential as a young man and embittered as an older one"
I think so too. Can not understand why so many people seem to think Snape is such a good person.

Leon RE I think it was due to the shock of finding out he wasn't a villain, like I first thought after book 6. And also his love for Lily, a muggle-born, implies he may not be as prejudiced as he typically acts, but you're right, he is not a very nice person, he was a bully to his students and at times quite selfish.

Yes that's probably it. I like Snape because he's such a grey character. On the one hand he's a pretty awful person but on the other hand he does work for the good side and he saves innocent people from getting (physically) hurt when it's possible.

Oh, I don't know. I think he's more of a Heathcliff.
