Bird Don't be so offensive towards other people, everyone has their own opinion and likes their own books.

Josh I don't believe in sugarcoating. This is an opinion forum, and I offered my opinion. Catcher in the Rye is utter junk; nearly 300 pages of "poor pitiful me, surrounded by all these phony peasants." Disregarding the horrid protagonist and the disgustingly repetitive writing style, this book was literally endless, though in an entirely different sense. Holden just whines and whines and whines... and then it stops, transitioning to Holden saying he told this story from an insane asylum (where, hopefully, his narcissism is treated).

This book just shows that a "classic" doesn't earn that title from being good; just old.

Bird That's okay :) I just don't like the fact you said "except emos;" since it can be found offensive, that's all I'm saying.

message 4: by Monty J (new)

Monty J Heying Oddly, Josh sounds just like Holden.

message 5: by Josh (new)

Josh Come on, Monty; no need to be insulting.

message 6: by Monty J (new)

Monty J Heying Okay, I withdraw the word, "just." But really, read what you wrote and consider the tone of your words.

message 7: by Josh (new)

Josh Rereading my prevgious statement, I did not see any use of the phrases "goddam," "phony," "it really does," it "it kills me." Away from that, I did my absolute best to keep my criticism from sounding anything like something Holden would say. That suggests to me that you compared me to Holden Caulfield as a way to insult me. I don't know if that was your intention or not, but I still felt insulted.

message 8: by Monty J (new)

Monty J Heying I'm sorry if it came across that way. It was just an observation triggered by terms like: "hate it" "loathed it" and "whiny shit." It's the tone conveyed by the words that seems similar, not the actual words. No insult was intended, sincerely.

message 9: by Bird (new)

Bird Oh come on -.- Josh just stop trying to be the one who is right 'cause you're not. We were just not very charmed by the tone of your comment and we said something about it. That's it and there is no reason for defending yourself. Just 'excuse me' would be enough.

message 10: by Josh (new)

Josh @Monty: As long as you didn't mean to offend, wer're alright.

@Berthe: There's no right or wrong. This is an opinion forum, and I offered my opinion. I don't care if you're "charmed" or not, and I'm not going to apologize. Frankly, I don't know what you're actually upset about.

message 11: by Bird (new)

Bird So it's clear that you are not going to apologize, that's okay. I just wanted you to know that I do not like the way you were talking about emos, as I said before. Then, if it is still not clear, lets stop wasting our time on this.

message 12: by Josh (new)

Josh That's your problem? My mentioning emos? I picked emos for their stereotype: whiny preteens who wear black and complain about everything. If my mentioning emos what offends you, then I apologize if you, yourself, are an emo.

message 13: by Bird (new)

Bird Not mentioning them, the way you talk about them. Me myself am not an emo, but I do hav sone friends that are and they are not like you have just described them. Then, they did not like Catcher in the Rye, as you stated xD

message 14: by Josh (new)

Josh Actual emos? Or do they just enjoy the style?

Anyway, I just used emos to make a point or only whiny people could like such a whjiny book. Maybe emos were the wrong social class to use, but it seemed to fit at the time.

message 15: by Monty J (new)

Monty J Heying I like the term, "emos." It's new to me. Thanks for the introduction. Now I'm going to study it. Can you recommend any books or stories featuring one?

message 16: by Monty J (new)

Monty J Heying Other than Catcher?

message 17: by Josh (new)

Josh Catcher in the Rye is the only "emo" book I could recommend, and even then, I can't really do that because Holden doesn't qualify as emo; just a spoiled rich brat who should've been spanked a lot more as a child.
