Matthew But wasn't going outside the universe and re-entering it at a different point the only way the could travel faster than light? That's the part I don't understand. It even says that they were building more of the tiny cube ships for the buggers and pequeninos, ones that couldn't travel by any other means.

Nonong Ordoñez try rereading the part where Olhuado, Grego and Val discuss about the theory. It might explain some of the confusing parts but imho, everything they have theorized are technically expounded in the last part where Jane was able to transport everyone she commits to memory without using the ships. It's like she becomes more adept in bending the Outside rules the more often she uses it. There was also this part where Miro and Peter suggested unconventional means to manipulate faster-than-light travel.

About the ships, I think they decided to make it simple enough to avoid Jane committing too much of her network memory in memorizing the ship details. Things become more complex when Jane starts to consider the number of passengers (and their 'individuality') riding the ships.
