Monty J Heying The comments I refer to came from this site. I don't "hang" with anyone. I recall a schoolteacher saying that the book is still banned in some schools because of the profanity.

J. Bryce I think one of the things CITR gets "challenged" for is the swearing -- mostly in small-minded communities. See the ALA's write up on it, on their Banned and/or Challenged Books list.

☯Emily Ginder Me! I disliked the book because of the constant swearing. I don't rate any book higher than 3*'s if the writer can't portray a character without vulgarity. Yes, I agree with Monty that "in my experience, which is quite broad, excessive foul language usually denotes poor vocabulary, low intellect and bad manners." Who admires a character with qualities like that?

Shannon Emily, I am very interested in your perspective on this topic. Not only as it pertains to Holden, but other characters in other books as well. Do you find expletives in general to be off putting? Or have you come across any literary examples in which you've found them acceptable?
