John Yeah I'm going to agree, piggy really is a symbol of reason in this story, aren't his glasses used to create fire? They are also broken.. He sheds blood... Yeah I think you pretty much summed it up MONTY and MATTHEW, but it does lead me to think about Gary's post too, what if they ending was different? Why did he choose this particular one? It seems not all hope is lost at the end of the book, after all they are returned to civilization, but part of me wants the say the trauma of the island alone has created the loss enough for them that will last far beyond the return to civilization. Interestingly enough the comparison to a civilization they are returning (which is filled with war and brutal killing) is not that far from what has happened or at least begun to happen on the island.

Kristen Callihan I also feel that his death signifies that our ideals will not hold out compared to instincts and human nature when it comes to survival. That is another reason for why his death is so tragic.
