Kagama-the Literaturevixen A color miniseries with Gerard Depardieu was made in 2000.

Christine S. The Disney version, in my eyes, was surprisingly as close to the novel as it could have been for an audience that was primarily composed of children. Frankly I'm shocked that Disney even thought of making that particular book into a children's movie--there are some really questionable topics and situations in it (some of which they kept or alluded to in the movie!).

Caroline I actually really love the Disney movie, as far as it is from the original Victor Hugo's story. I read the book many years after watching Disney (and enjoying the French musical), and I must confess that I was really surprised: I thought the anime had taken even more freedom. But finally, I could find details here and there directly coming from the book, and that I didn't expect at all. But yeah, definitely the Disney movie does not have a lot in common with the book, but as Christine said, let's remember that Disney is basically meant for children (or "the child who lives in us"). So I'm really happy with the result (maybe because there is no Pierre Gringoire to be destroyed by a poor adaptation, and God knows how I love this character ;) ).
