Susan Waterwyk I too wept for Valjean but also for Fantine her misery was the most tragic. AND I wept with joy when gave Valjean was shown mercy and given the silver calndlesticks. This was the most significant event in the book. The act of mercy that changed Valjean forever and led to his own compassionate and heroic behavior. Valjean died knowing he had tried his best in life to repay the kindness he received. He died a happy man. The best treatment for the misery of life is compassion, mercy, love.

Mike Valjean's death may have been beautiful for himself, but not for anybody else. ;) I just thought the ending was so trite and predictable. Anyway, I guess it would be boring if we all had the same opinion on the matter. :)
