That's an excellent point, Joanne. Sorry to hear that you've been there too. I know what depression feels like as well, so I definitely agree that his behavior fits that of a depressed person.

I guess I just found the ending too easy and predictable. I felt like Hugo was pushing our collective buttons so that we would get out our hankies and start howling. I would have just preferred something more original. But your explanation for JV's behavior definitely makes sense.

Oh dear, sorry you've been there too. Still, I think having been depressed makes one more sensitive to stories like Valjean's which might otherwise not make sense!
