Libbie I don't think I'd put 50 shades in with New Adult. Also find it sort of ironic that Twilight got an Ugh but 50 was listed without it.

Casey Ford Haven't read Fifty yet... Just know it's not YA. Definitely Contemporary Romance I think. But I'm fairly sure Contemporary and New Adult are pretty interchangeable.

Libbie True. Then again, I'd also put 50 shades in the trash, so I'm not exactly unbiased.

Casey Ford Is it really that bad? From what I've read ABOUT it it doesn't seem all that different any other NA/CR I've read. But I haven't read it yet so I can't tell you for sure

Libbie I could go on and on about it, but I won't. I'll leave it at three comments. The writing is poor (repetitive words/phrases, all characters are American yet speak in Britishisms, etc.) The "sex" is vanilla porn at best. And it's nothing whatsoever to do with BDSM and everything to do with a controlling, abusive relationship.

It was bad when it was Twilight fanfiction - giving the characters different names didn't change that.

Casey Ford How the hell is Fifty Shades Twilight fanfiction?! Fanfiction usually entails the same themes, characters, and/or Universe in them... 50 Shades, from what I can tell, doesn't have anything like that.

How has it gotten so popular and controversial? I mean from what read about it, it wasn't any different from the tamest NA I've read. "Vanilla" porn isn't even close to good enough when you've read stories like The Edge of Never, Bad Rep, Easy, and ALL of the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series.

Just saying...

Libbie It started as Twilight fanfiction (a large section of the fandom writes stories where the characters from the book are all human.)

This should help any confusion. This, too.

There are several controversies where 50 is concerned - some based on the fact it was free for everyone fanfiction then pulled offline for money. Some are based on the fact that it glorifies an abusive relationship.

It's incredibly vanilla, and repetitive at that, but the spin machine called it erotica and so on.

Casey Ford It doesn't sound anywhere as bad as Beautiful Disaster though... Relationship-wise

Can't answer that one. I haven't read Beautiful Disaster. It sort of lives on my TBR list, forever passed over for something else.

Casey Ford Same here.... I have about 60 of those. :P

I've read spoilers of the story in case you were wondering.
