Craig Scott Is it about reading a serious classic or about reading something to entertain you?
Last time I tried to read a classic for the sake of it being a classic was Ulysses as a student. Good God I'm not bothering with that again!

I read Dickens because I genuinely like the stories and characters. I can't be bothered to read a back catalogue on some critically acclaimed author just to name drop it.

That's just me anyway. If Mark Twain couldn't stand Dickens then there must be thousands upon thousands of detractors. Such is the beauty of these forums.

Fred Some of the most rewarding reading, for me, has come from authors whom I've tried on a lark. Such is the case with Dickens and others. As an added bonus, these usually lead me to other very enjoyable reads. So many books, so little time!
