I think that the Kubrick version did have the upper hand on atmospheric horror; the Overlook Hotel seemed like a much more isolated place. The opening scenes showing the winding mountainous road, the scenes of snow falling continually outside the the hotel windows all added to the horror of being isolated and snowbound.....references to the Donner Party resonated.
couldn't have said it better myself. That's why if I had to chose the better movie I would chose Kubrick's version. I feel like there is not that many movies out there that are true to books. A lot of them have to have Hollywood aspects like explosions, sex, and swearing to appeal to larger audience. I also think that if you want to do movie based on book, do it right. Don't change too much about it
Kubrick - all the way. Just because the mini series is truer to the book doesn't mean that makes it better. Far from it. I know that the movie has stayed with me down the years and when I have a nightmare it often involves that frozen figure in the maze. The mini series has completely faded from my mind.

I did like Nicholson's acting though. He was a deranged, perhaps over the top maniac who got what he deserved (although not his fault he went nuts). I hate the change in ending from hotel blowing up to him freezing to death. It was creepier but not necessarily better
