Rade I agree, Jack Nicholson was grea, as always. Shelly Duvall was good too. She had that innocence feel to her (i.e her calm girlish voice)but she was kind of annoying.
Nobody seemed to like the TV movie besides me. It did not have big budget, but it did have decent acting and decent special effects. I think it would appeal to true SK fans. You can find the TV version on Youtube if you are interested.

Jeni Unbelievably, perhaps, I video-taped it when it came out and have since transferred it to DVD. I have it in my library and watch it from time to time. :)

I always read the book first, though, to get the feel and nuances in my mind, then watch the mini-series. I really do like it.

Rade Few years back, I used to watch movies before reading book and then compare what was omitted and what was done right. Now I read books first because I want to always feel good about myself, even if everything in the movie is not according to book.

I like your comment about video taping the movie. Can't say I haven't done that in the past haha

Jeni The rule in our house is, "If the movie is based on a book, we all have to read the book first." That's from Disney to Aliens. We look at movies as summaries of the often more in-depth books, so we want the back story when we watch.

Also, you wouldn't believe the video tapes I still have! I STILL watch the Ted Danson Gulliver's Travels occasionally. So well done! Sorry for the derail!

Rade I like the rule that you have going on. It seems reasonable and it might be something that I would probably use as a rule in my house. Problem is that people in my house don't read much...at least not the books I read.

i can't believe you still have VHS tapes. The only place I've seen them is thrift stores or old movie trailers where it says "now available in VHS at your local store". I find it quite impressive you still hold on to that lost medium. Good job. Don't throw them away. Please :)

Jeni I also have LaserDiscs. Remember the huge LP sized movies in sleeves. Yes, I have a player, too! I am that old! :D

Rade Holy God, I have not seen those in a loooong time. The fact that you still have those is blowing my mind right now. I don't know anyone else who has those. Wow, just wow.

Luke Nicholson plays Nicholson. He IS Torrance in the film, but he's doing his usual scenery-chewing thing. It's great to watch, but very hammy.

The Kubrick has atmosphere going for it, in spades. It's a flawed film, but a fun one.

Luke (Also, even though the usage was unlicensed (if I recall correctly?) the soundtrack to the Kubrick is amazing. As with 2001, lots of mod composition. Would be interesting to see a version with the original Wendy Carlos soundtrack still in place - only the opening theme with the vocalise was kept in the final version.
