Are you sure you read the end? I felt that kids are so resilient that given a few months or maybe a couple of years, he would completely adjust. Plus I felt that seeing the Room again was a big step to helping both the mom and boy start to put it behind them. In fact, i was thinking that the mom didn't want to see the Room but it probably helped her more than her son.
