Totally agree with you. He had no children to talk to and he was very smart so of course he would have an advanced vocabulary.
I agree with you. I have a five year old and I did not find the narration to be unbelievable. Children learn at the level they are exposed to. His mother very well could have taught him the words that may come off as "advanced". If they would have had him doing advanced algebra or approaching his situation from a more mature perspective I would question it. I saw the impressive vocabulary words as a triumph for the mother who was the sole provider of any education provided.

He was a smart boy...his personality and intelligence were a product of his mother. Parents and children of the "outside" are distracted, have other priorities and other external influences. It was a most interesting novel and something I really hadn't thought much about before!
