I do agree. The Silmarillion and all the other later books (Tales of Middle Earth, the Lays of Beleriand, Unfinished Tales etc) are for addicts only. I think JRRT knew what he was doing in limiting publication, in his lifetime, to LOTR, the Hobbit, the Bombadil poems and his preparation to publish the Silmarillion. The rest is "hard going" for a casual reader.
