Well because Sampson was the last person who ever talked to her before she got on the bus. And she had no family besides the kids at the state home.
I don't think so, maybe because Sampson was for her just another kid of state home, not even a friend, but who knows, maybe you are right or maybe she just wrote to the mother that she has never known.

Maybe it was Sampson, I thought it was to her teacher at the State Home.
