Samantha Thank you all for your input!! I will definitely give him a try, probably with Great Expectations because that's the one I was planning on starting with. :)

Holly I would agree with your good friend and say no, don't do it. If you hate Austen you aren't going to like this one. On the other hand, if you are truly curious, give a few chapters a try. I love both Dickens, Austin and enjoy reading classic novels of all kinds.

Susan Holly Rust I disagree. Dickens may be of the same era, but his writing is altogether different, he wrote about the average person not the well to do. Great expectations would be a good one to start with, better than the movie.

Holly The Bennetts (Pride & Prej) were not well to do, neither was Fanny Price (Mansfield Park) so I disagree there. If I were to pick a Dickens first for someone, I much prefer Oliver Twist or David Copperfield over Great Expectations.
