Ok thanks for clarifying that for me! Now I don't have to reread TP! I think that maybe at the start Justin C. wanted Alicia and Peter to be together and then for some reason decided to have Amy grow up so Peter can be with Amy? Which I find weird. I mean it seems to me that in TP Amy is a 100 year old child suspended in time. Now in TT she physically is an adult and "changed" but she still is a 100 yr old child!
I was so confused most of the time that I started to question my own intelligence and ability to understand a plot beyond the adolescent vampire genre that I've been forced to read in the interim while waiting or this book to come out. What is Wolgast exactly? Was he a viral made by Carter or some personification of Carter? And how did he just suddenly appear on the field to fight? So many parts I could not make sense of. My head is literally swimming in confusion.
Cousin-I think Wolgast was made by Carter and fought in his place because he felt guilty that he talked Carter in signing himself over to Project Noah. He knew Carter was innocent but didn't care. What are Dopeys? Are they what Carter made? JC never really explained that. Without ruining the twist at the end if there were the original 12 on the field 11 minus babcock Amy makes 12. Carter was really Wolgast who took the place of you know who?
The book described Dopeys as creatures who aren't active but only feed to survive every once in awhile (and then later in the book it made a brief mention to how they were Carter's creations). I want to say it was in one of the first chapters where the characters Vor, Tifty and Cruks were introduced. I "think." It was extremely difficult for me to keep all the new characters straight upon initially reading their story lines. It wasn't until much later in the book in the other characters' plots that prior characters and their stories clicked and made sense. Did you have this problem? I'm guessing we will return to the characters on the bus in book three. Book one was more about the beginning, book two the present and book three will probably be about the future (i.e. after the virals and rebuilding the world). I don't get your question- who took the place of you know who? Who's "you know who?" Now I'm really confused. The problem is that I read The Passage over a year and a half ago. And reading The Twelve on my Kindle, I had no idea there was a handy glossary of character info. until I finished with the book, at which point it was useless because by that time I had already pieced together what I needed. Funny that you asked if Sara was in love with Alicia or Peter because I could've sworn she was in love with Theo but settled for Hollis! And I don't get the Peter-Amy story either. I thought the scene in The Passage where she kissed him was touching because it was so innocent- it was suggestive of a girl who was standing on the eternal precipice of womanhood but would always still be a girl. Until book two, that is. Then bam! She's a woman and she and Peter have some bizarro love thing going on. What the?? As for the topic of this thread, I personally would've liked to see a few more main characters die. Sara's story worked out way too nicely for my taste.
SPOILERS DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T READ TT. Ok now I'm confused as to what happened at the end. There are 12 Virals and Amy makes 13. Babcock dies in TP leaving 11 Virals. Amy turns into a Viral so there are now 12 Virals. Wolgast takes Carter place fighting ensues. Alicia kills Martinez all hell breaks loose when the bomb detonates. Amy dissapears no one knows what happened to her. This is my interpretation of the events. Fast forward all the red eyes die, Alicia knows she can't fight the hunger anymore if she drinks blood she will turn into a full blown Viral. She drinks and lays down until the sun comes up to kill herself only she doesn't change and she doesn't die. Amy is now with Carter and he's telling her to let Wolgast go, and that she needs to prepare for a battle coming. Alicia hears Zero telling her to come to him. I assumed Zero did what Carter did and had someone takes his place at the battle. Now I realize maybe he escaped? So it ends with Zero calling to Alicia and she says, "You bastard I'm coming for you". When did Zero become the worst of the 12 wasn't he Dr.Lear? What crimes did Lear commit?
I was confused as to who Zero was as well until I saw in the glossary at the end that Zero was the Prof. But Zero wasn't at the battle, right? He's been hanging out somewhere else all this time- at least that's my understanding. So was the Prof. really evil (as in, he had evil motives for wanting the virus)? I thought he and Dr. Lear initially wanted the virus for altruistic purposes- to help humanity but now I can't remember and am thinking this must not be the case for him to be so bad and the father of all the virals. As for Alicia, I've never really cared for her character. I don't know why- maybe I just can't relate to her masculinity. I think you we're on to a good idea with Sara liking Alicia. Plot twist- Alicia's never truly been into Peter because she finally realizes she prefers women lol. And regarding Wolgast- so all this time he's been a Viral (which I knew) but waiting to show himself to Amy until the battle? So was it even really Carter on the field or was Carter still locked in the boat while Wolgast pretended to be Carter? That would make sense as to why Carter appeared on the field so much different (i.e. smaller) than the other Virals when they all walked out. What is your overall opinion of this book? Personally, I was disappointed. I absolutely LOVED The Passage but this book fell flat for me. Don't get me wrong, JC is an amazing writer and there are plenty of gripping scenes but something did not work for me. I've been mulling it over for days but still can't quite put my finger on why I didn't appreciate it like the TP. However, in the post apocalyptic genre, he's still the best writer out there- in my opinion of course :)
HAHA I never thought Sara liked Alicia, but that would be funny! Grammar and Commas go a long way! I meant I couldn't remember if it was Alicia or Sara who was in love with Peter! I don't like Alicia I never have. There is a part in TP where Amy is standing, I think at the wall in the Colony and Wolgast comes to her and Amy says something like I knew it was you and she's telling a viral that she loves him. That's how I knew Wolgast was a Viral. Carter was locked in a ship by Wolgast. That's my point what did Zero do that's so heinous? I actually loved this book more than TP! I just didn't get all the connections, like the thing that happened in "The Field" Vorhees is married to Dee who is Cruks Sister who is Old Mau's cousins brother's roommates Niece that stuff gets really old to me after awhile. Actually the weird names get to me too! Tifty,Cruk,Mau,Apgar, really 100 years later and we have names like this? I think what didn't work for me is that in everything I read (interviews with JC) he always said 12 was about what happened after the 12 left the chalet, the aftermath of that and catching up with Peter,Amy etc.. The only 12 that anyone went after was Alicia going after Martinez. I just don't get why call it the 12 when 4 Virals have storylines... Babcock,Carter,Zero and Martinez.
Wait, so let me see if I understood you correctly- JC said The Twelve was about the life of the Virals after they became virals while the rest of humanity was in chaos? If that's so, that doesn't make sense because the Virals had a very small role in this book. In fact, I thought their quick entrance and demise at the end was all very anticlimactic. I found a lot of the side stories very interesting- like the autistic bus driver and Kittridge etc- and would've liked to continue to follow them more. I agree with whoever on here said that it just felt like all the main characters were "safe" in this book. In TP, I never got that impression. It felt like anyone could go at any time in any number of ways. Part of what I LOVED about TP was the medical/ science and military story. In this one, the military components really bogged down the plot. Most of the time, I couldn't follow the military strategy and plotting to take action until it was in motion. Same for some of the explanations about the jobs certain individuals did like with the oil rigs. Why did you like this book better than TP? Can you please explain because I'm still trying to figure out my feelings for this book :) And also, what to read next? Two years is a long wait lol
And also, I may have missed it, but I didn't read much about Zero in this book. Yes, he had a few lines interspersed throughout like "Come to me," but I don't remember it delving into his story or whereabouts..
I liked the story of April and Kittredge and the people on the bus. That's why i asked what happened to them. I was pissed at what happened to Kitteridge, but understand why he did what he did. Yes JC said in an interview last year with EW that TT is about the 12 Virals and what happens after they escape. This book was not what I was expecting. I liked that this book wasn't a 2 part thing like last time. I felt robbed in TP when I got so involved with Amy and Wolgast to just have them disappear. then Amy shows up and she is 100 years old. What happened to her? Where was she for all this time? I thought TT was going to answer that. Frankly I skipped over some of the oil rig crap. This book was called The Twelve is it the 12 Virals? The 12 on the bus? Who are The Twelve?
I was curious about the people on the bus so I went and reread the chapter. Amber and Kittredge's child was named Bernard Donadio, I'm guessing Alicia's ancestor. So, that was their purpose, I guess, and to show a generic version of what was happening all over the country at the time.
I guess that would make more sense! Do they ever say who Alicia's mom and dad are and how she ended up with the colonel?
I went to Wikipedia with that same question! (Great minds think alike:) They only say that her parents were killed at the Colony during "Dark Knight" and that's when the colonel started raising her. I remember that there is more of the story surrounding this, now I have to go dig out "The Passage"!
