For Gilles: Yes, I agree -- it's certainly true that the author wrote the book while living in an English-speaking country - please also see my comment of Dec. 07, 2011 in reply to Singleton's remark.
Since he lived in NYC during that time, B612 could refer to a ship of sorts... the B line subway that ran from 6a-12a ?
