Ahmad My initial response to the book was that it's a straight forward love story and because I enjoyed it, I'm thinking of choosing it for a paper that I have to write for uni. but I read this JSTOR article which suggests that something else is at work. Not sure if you would be able to access the article (or even if you would want to read it) but this is the link: http://ezproxy.cavehill.uwi.edu:2106/...
The gist is that its all satire, the writer's argument is based on the destruction that Florinto's love causes (suicide, murder and robbery) and the meaning of the names of the characters.
Also if you check the wiki entry on the book, there's a critic that suggests that Florintino is actually a villain like Humbert in Lolita. I'm starting to think that I got it all wrong, lol.

Alison I'm not that deep. Its a love story. Florintino was in love with the idea of love. What he really had was an obsession.
