Jennae Thank you Susan. You have completely valid points that I agree with. I also think that Griet wasn't aware of the power she had. If she did have some sort of awareness of her power I think she believed it to be detrimental to her. She assumed that if she pushed boundaries too far she would lose her job. She ultimately did -wearing Catherina's pearl earring for the portrait- but would have been conflicted between the expectations from both Vermeer and Catherina. I believe that her power is most pronounced when she returns to the house 10 years later, a woman that has made a life for herself.

Susan Your concept of where the power lies is interesting, and I think I will try to apply it to other books as I read them. I think it might clarify some of the relationships.

Jennae Oh wow, that is so cool. I think I will start doing that also. I think it may really help solve some of plot and character relationships in certain stories. If not, you might discover a structure completely different to the one I thought of, which would be interesting. If you do happen to see a trend when you apply this concept let me know! I would be very curious to hear what you discover.
