Really good point about obsession. She was clearly obsessed by Heathclff, although her character was largely undeveloped. Although "Wuthering Heights" was marked a real change in the development of the English novel, it is still a progression of that genre and thus influenced by the novels preceding it. Earlier English novels were full of female characters who were mistreated or at least treated rudely by male characters, but ended up marrying them. By today's standards, I'd hope the dog thing might be a red flag for a young woman in evaluating prospective suitors.
