Btw, in Ursula K. LeGuin's fantasy books about Earthsea the majority of characters were dark-skinned (only the Kargs are fair-skinned but they are a minority). And she's a white american author. You can write what you want as an author. Only writing what you know is a lazy excuse, not only in the Fantasy genre.
