Samantha The Escapist I don't want to be a dick about this but it's a point that might sound it anyway...wouldn't it stand to reason that in POC as you say compose 40 percent of the population that should be almost as well represented by the colour of the authors? If so wouldn't they be more likely to write about people of their own colour?

In other novels set in countries that aren't predominantly Caucasian is there a fair representation of books featuring caucasian people? I'm not about to pretend that I'm jaded about race because I am a young white chick, but I do think that people tend to jump to conclusions and generalizations with racism and often seem to take it too far in the opposite direction. I just want to play devil's advocate here.

Xdyj I can't say for all countries but AFAIK minorities are much more underrepresented in published works in my country than in US or Canada. And sorry I just checked Wikipedia & the number should be 28% not 40%. Personally, from an outsider perspective I think Americans have done a pretty good job in promoting equality between ethnic groups & overt racism has already been eliminated in most places. Also sorry if I didn't say it clearly, I wasn't calling anyone a racist in that post, just saying it might be nice if minority groups (POCs, lgbt ppl, immigrants etc.) can be better represented in YA. :)

Samantha The Escapist Oh and I wasn't really trying to make much of a point except to explore the other side of it. In canada we don't see any of YA novels by canadian authors so I can't really even guess if these novels set in USA are accurate given that i don't live there.

Also in Nova Scotia there really aren't nearly as many people of colour as I expect there are in other places. Certainly we have many people of all different shades but staggeringly more white people from what I've seen though..I don't really tend to notice. Now that I really think about it there are a lot of cultures around here...maybe my parents did it right when they raised me not to see skin colour lol.
