I can understand both Mariam's and Laila's actions. Its not about the characters "ringing true". Mariam's actions towards her father were justified.. after all he was the one who married her off ato a guy twice or maybe thrice her age! how could she forgive him? when a girl in Laila'a situation in a third world country finds out that she's pregnant, what else she could do for herself or her unborn child?? its either death/ prostitution or choosing a worst stereotypical man and a having decent life for her and her child!
I completely agree with Supriya. I cannot imagine how we can even question any of their deeds in the face of all the suffering the two were going through. They completely stood strong and emerged as heroes.
Errr... Laila did not _choose_ the worst man to marry - it's not as though she went to a singles bar full of great guys and said, "Hey, he looks like a wife-beater, let's go home with him!" She was COERED into marrying him and accepted his "proposal" for one reason and one only - her unborn child would have perished in the war-torn outdoors.
