Yes. I agree that up front teacher input is crucial for this generation of young adults. Perhaps it would be beneficial to relate Holden to familiar characters, such as Andrew in BREAKFAST CLUB and John Voss in EMPIRE FALLS, or others such as these. Perhaps events such as Columbine and Virginia Tech even.
So it's pretty safe to say, that I have renewed confidence in teaching Catcher, and that I need to do so carefully. However, what I need to do now is find appropriate resources in providing the cultural and historical context around the novel's setting. IF anybody has anything further to add, I'd be forever grateful!!
The average student was not impressed in the day it was written. It is not a book for the average student--it is for the outsiders and those who identify with them. I remember friends who read it when we were in college and got nothing out of it except that somebody was trying to shock them with "dirty" language. My best-buddies and I thought it was a knockout.
