not a big role? Neville stood up to voldemort for crying out loud! When he saw that Harry had "died" he didn't crumble he started to rally everyone and told them that it wasn't over just because Harry was "dead" that they should continue to fight.
In many interviews, Rowling mentions she wrote the end of the story first, then went back and wrote the journey to that end. Ginny and Harry were destined from the first moment they were conceived in her mind.

My thought was that....I never liked Ginny all that much. It seemed like Rowling was scrambling at the end to find someone for Harry and she just picked Ginny. Don't get me wrong I like her, but I don't LOVE her for Harry.
