I think in the movie, Tristan is only in "real" danger once or twice, whereas in the book, you get the sense that the whole world of "Faerie" is slightly dangerous. It's not one thing, but a whole lot of descriptive nuances that add up to an impression that humans usually don't stand much of a chance on their own in this world. Having this "Edge" makes his triumphs all the sweeter.
