Everyone is flawed. Our friends are flawed, but we still like them. I think it is that the reader wants to know he is in good hands -- that the author speaks deliberately and will not break a bond of trust with the reader. Unlikeable characters threaten that, and when the are all unlikeable it is incumbent on the author to provide some reassurance and a substitute satisfaction. Here is where "deeper significance" comes in.
