I don't even remember the "sex and violence" elements, just the wonderful characters and writing.
Agreed, I always admired Garp's wonderful structure; like a Symphony and the outrageous luridity of Irving's style. m

You should read Last Night in Twisted River, in which Irving goes down another level in the rabbit hole of metafiction
