I read The key to Rebecca and Eye of the needle in my teens and have just recently come back to him and read Pillars, Fall of giants and I am a third of the way through World, he said in an interview he always wanted to write these kind of books but his publisher wanted the others so maybe you can see these ones are a labour of love although I did enjoy his thrillers.
'Labor of Love' Jan, you used the right words to describe his efforts. I agree with you. He was just unbelievably brilliant with his historical fiction. I read only Pillars of the Earth, and I really think it's a magnificent achievement. Just for that one Novel itself, we can say without any hesitation that he's a great Writer.
