Lori, I share your high opinion of THE WINDS OF WAR and WAR AND REMEMBRANCE. They are 2 of my all-time favorites. The characters are so superbly presented that you feel af if you are looking over their shoulders as you go through the book. I really liked the TV miniseries of both of those books, starring Robert Mitchum, Polly Bergan, Ali McGraw, et al.
I also meant to add a recommendation to you of a couple of others that you might enjoy of a somewhat similar nature, i.e., a saga of families caught up in World War II. These books are of Americans or English who found themselves in a foreign country during that tumultuous time. GODS OF WAR by John Toland (Japan), TANAMARA by Noel Barber (Singapore), and SAKKARA by Noel Barber (EGYPT). A TOWN LIKE ALICE by Nevil Shute (England, Malaya, and Australia) is also a very excellent book.
