That's an interesting interpretation that's very different from mine. I had thought that the imagery was a hallucinatory experience brought on by the pills, but I like your idea better.
Actually, I was so curious to read the end again, I got my book back from my friend, and read it again, and now I agree with you. I do think you are right. Poor Lilly!
A professional reviewer wrote this: "And although Lilly realizes, having spent seventy years on the run, that there’s no real escape from history, her own narrative is a means of coming to terms with that history. Even in the last pages, when she’s supposed to die, Barry hints that she’ll carry on, if only to keep her memories alive."
I don't know what that beautiful ending meant! Darn! LOL
