By rats? What an idea!!
first of all, we don't talk about that movie. and they used the half mask in the musical because the prosthetics were too much for the actors and they couldn't see that well. (there was also an incident where the Phantom's prosthetics were stuck on Christine's lips while kissing her and that's probably why they made a half mask.)
