Sam I think you're right. Some people would just easily give five stars to Twilight or Harry Potter as they would to Don Quixote. There is no such thing as consistency though; people will be rating things from an entirely subjective perspective. I do try to pay attention to the meaning of the stars and to rate accordingly, but many people will simply rate something as highly or lowly as they can because they love or hate the author and the book. A high average rating proves only that you are a cult author with a broad appeal and a dedicated fan-base. This is why JK Rowlings average star rating is 4.37 and someone like, say, Joseph Conrad has an average star rating of 3.42.

Geoffrey Yes, I like the half star suggestion. Many times I am torn between a 3 and a 4.
