To shut him up indefinately.
Truth be known I don't believe he was murdered but I don't doubt he took some heat for these books. That and after reading Infidel and Price of Honour and Abuse of Power my suspitions are up.
There were supposed to be seven more books.
He died after the 1st book was published. He handed in the next 2 to be published before he died.
