I think you're right. I read somewhere once that the radio series was the first funny sci-fi. I know one of the problems encountered with getting the film off the ground was that Hollywood couldn't cope with the idea of humour and sci-fi. Then Men in Black was a big hit, and producers suddenly wanted more funny sci-fi, and picked it up.
