I agree, but I think Cassandra Clare wanted to make the battle feel more real. Sudden death really gets a reader's attention and brings them quickly into the action of the battle...
Of course I know, I was just making something funny because I know if Cassie actually changed a part such as Max not dying it would cause the end.
