I too have wondered if muggle borns are actually a distant descendant of some squib who was cast out and ended up having a child with a muggle. Then later on down the family line the dormant magical gene pops up again. I can imagine the muggle born child could have no clue about their magical ancestry. So Hermione wouldn't know.
I don't think so...then at least she would have some wizards/witches in the family. Does that count? I don't know.
