I could not have explained it any better than that.
Guy thanks for your analysis I agree with you. Lets also not forget the continued and deeper entrenched oppression of each other. This is also present in Handmaids because some of the women, like the wives, agree with this society. There was a part, its been a while since I read it so I can't find the page, but a part where it was stated that some women helped plan this society. I would think as a ruler you know you have succeeded in domination when people oppress themselves and each other.
We do this today by believing so strongly that one opinion is more right than another, consider racism, homophobia, sexism, etc. I am sure it will get worse with the Bill just passed allowing the government to detain American citizens indefinitely with no trial. When will it, or has it already begun, when neighbors start reporting their neighbors as terrorists because they don't have the same ideologies?
Very illuminating -- thanks -- it makes me want to read this book again, despite the awful 'ceremony'.
