Thanks Olivia. I was able to find online the exchange between Jem and Nathan, which apparently I had forgotten, maybe selectively remembering the conversation following that, between Jem and Atticus, as being important.
Olivia is correct. Nathan Radley filled the tree. Nathan moved home to look after Boo after their father died.
