Sheila Whether he’s Boo’s jailor or protector is unclear. Equally unclear is his reason for filling up the knothole where Boo leaves gifts for the kids – does he want to keep his brother from making connections with the outside world, or just prevent him from getting hurt by thoughtless children?

This is from the Schmoop website (whatever that is). It looks like there is indeed some question as to Nathan's motivation for his actions.

Thanks both of you for your replies. Loose ends always make me wonder if somehow I missed an integral detail of the story that everyone else "got".

Hpchloe i just read the book so i remember it vividly and it was filled in by boo's father because he did'nt want boo to leave the kids anything else.

Joclyn I agee with Hpchloe, it was Boo's father, he didn't want Boo to have contact with the outside world.
