Lol, I hope this doesn't sound sexist but I'm pretty sure only a man would pick Mr. Bennet, especially for the reasons you list :) As a wife myself, I don't like the idea of a character who's good at manipulating his! But of course, with a wife like Mrs. Bennet it IS something to admire :)
Actually, I'm very fond of Mr. Bennet. I think he is an Excellent father. Also, the ability to manipulate is not all bad. I enjoy the challenge of having someone who matches my wits. Plus, I love his sense of fun. He says a few choice words and watches the dramatic results. Obviously, he wouldn't be my first choice romantically, but in his younger days I'm sure he was Great!
Well I would have thought that being supportive of his daughters, particularly in the Nineteenth century would be an admirable trait. He manipulates his wife to generally stop her doing stupid things, and (and I don't care if this is sexist or not) Mrs Bennet is stupid. Not a stupid woman, just stupid.
And yes it was sexist.
Like Abby Lee, I' very fond of Mt Bennet as well. I adored him as a father to Lizzie, but he's a little too removed from his family for me to want someone like him romantically. He finds pleasure in the absurdities of live and social behaviour, and I would love to spend time with him as a friend, but I think it would drive me insane if I were to live with him.
I think Mr. Bennet would be less removed from his family if they weren't (besides his two eldest daughters) so incredibly unbearable!
I love Mr. Bennett for his tolerance of his wife. She is incredibly silly, but he realizes it was his choice to marry her. I love how he supports Lizzie and Jane. He is a good father to them.
Mr. bennet is only supportive of his two oldest daughters though, the other three are pretty much ignored or dealt with derisively. And yes they are silly, but there is an argument there: are they silly and thus he does not interact with them normally. Or are they silly because he does not interact with them normally. Up to you ;)
