Kirsten There is such more complete philosophy to be explored out there. I am a big Eckhart Tolle fan. But I will definitely check out your recommendations.

Frank I read that years ago. Brilliant!
Before that, I had read what I thought was probably the best book I've ever read, also by Hesse: Wanderings.In fact, check out this blog post which is a section of quoted text from Wanderings...

Will IV Yeah, I'll have to check that out too. The Stranger (Albert Camus) is a good one too, although relatively short.
