Simon, thanks for your comment. I believe that my son is plenty exposed to the real world. On the other hand, I feel that literature is a very important aspect of life. I love to read and try to instill that love in my kids. However, I have never read this book/play, and so that is why I asked about it. I wasn't sure if it was him trying to get out of something he didn't want to do, or if I should be concerned about the book itself.
I did actually tell him to suck it up and participate. I guess the real problem is that he doesn't swear and so when he has to read aloud in class and swear he is uncomfortable. I told him to talk to his teacher about that.
Bottom line is, I will now read the book so I can discuss it with him. I just wanted some outside opinion. So, thank you.

Look, Hemingway uses the N word, Shakespeare is anti-semitic, and Kepling is racist. Literature is a reflection of the times. He should deal with it.

i remember being in the 6th grade reading a science text out loud and having to say the word 'bitch' (female dog in heat; and i think the teacher took joy in my cringing)- i could have died
