Christine Well said. Although the books you suggest are both excellent reads, they have not stood the test of time yet. Mockingbird definitely has.

Melanie I loved A Time to Kill and it's been out for about 20 years know. I'm not sure what it takes to "stand the test of time." I'm personally disappointed in Mockingbird. Everyone says they love it, but I rarely see people using the lessons from it. We are still not treating others equally - race, sex, disability, and even religion.

Jeanie Jackson The question of changing read lists is not about banning the books, but I hope this books remains on the MUST read lists if possible. It was not require reading the last time I taught English but most of my students ending of reading it, (I wonder why?) and loving it. Years later I had come back and say it was on of only one or two books they read all the way through. That is so sad but at least Mockingbird is on that short list.
