What were you like at 19, if not somewhat selfish? That is normal behavior, and as far as growing up, she was stunted as well as Jack.
I could see her going back there. Many victims of abuse (or even plane crashes or traumatic experiences like 9/11) return to the scene in an attempt to move on. I believe she returned there to full explain to Jack why they couldn't return. Indeed, once they return, Jack, who's been Outside now, notices how small it is and how much better Outside is. I think it was important for both of them to move past the experience and go forward.
