What a ridiculous answer.
Please, Timothy K., keep those kinds of comments to yourself. It makes you seem rude, disrespectful, and stand-off-ish to say such rude thigs. If you have something constructive to say, please, enlighten us.
My thoughts exactly, Axela. I agree with you also, Jamie. The question caught my attention because when I was in high school it was required reading and I thank the teacher that insisted on it. Years later I read the book again and my appreciation for it was amplified viewing through adult eyes. The book was initially listed as science fiction. I think Orwell was a prophet. During G.W.Bush's second term a writer for the San Francisco Chronicle wrote a column which likened his administration to Orwell's world in 1984. The writer actually accused Bush of plagiarism.
I would love to see 1984 being taught in schools. However there are two main obstacles in it's way as far as I can see. Firstly the government would never allow it as it may lead to people thinking abou the world we live in, and secondly (And a complete contradiction to my first point) I doubt there are enough people in school these days that would take it in, what with the massive celebrity/social media/reality television culture there is now.
It was taught just a month ago in my school, and I understood "took it in," as you said it. The government either doesn't know or doesn't care. Believe me, it is happening. It just wish it was happening to a more mature age group.
It's a perfectly appropriate question, like most questions. At the end of the day, yes, I believe high schoolers should read this book, but it's a question I've pondered before.
