I agree whole heartedly... we need to give kids a lot more credit to, I think.
I was not a reader in high school but I did read 1984. I struggled through it because I was fascinated by the dys'topian structure and the respect I had for my government teacher. Don't sell adolescents short or what a great book can do for a reluctant reader.
I have to ask, because I really don't understand and with all respect, how someone could get nightmares from this book~?
I'm with Jo and the others on this... I'm not sure that this is really a "scary" novel in a Freddy Kruger kinda way... maybe prophetic scary... but not creature under the bed scary!?!?!?
@ Victoria, Uncomfortable how? Kids could use that excuse for not doing any number of things. Maybe their just uncomfortable with the idea they might have to use their brains for a change. When they are older and hopefully gainfully employed they are going to have to read 'stuff' they don't like or are 'uncomfortable with'.

Yes that might be but [ I can't see the original comment ] weren't we talking about high school kids~? Even in MY day and probably even my Dad's day an average high school student could "handle" this book. Either way it is an individual preference about what we read and even what we allow our children to read. Personally my children are taught that the world CAN BE a horrible place. There's a balance between sheltering and educating that children really do need. :o]
